National One Cent Day History 

The United States one-cent coin, also known as the penny, is a unit of currency equaling one one-hundredth of a United States dollar. The penny was first created in 1787 by the Founding Father and our nation’s first Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton. He is also on the front side of the current penny. Fun fact: did you know that Abraham Lincoln was the first president to appear on the front side of a circulating coin? It wasn’t until 1909, when Lincoln’s bust was placed on the newly designed Wheat Ears reverse side of the penny, in honor.
